awake soon

In 2013 I got to do so many amazing things and was so fortunate in dance. Tribal Massive, Tribal Fest, Infusion Emporium, and much, much more.

Despite a windfall of general amazingness, getting the opportunity to run the Dark Side Student Troupe has been one of the highlights and most rewarding new adventures I've embarked on. We got back into the swing of things at our first class of the year tonight, I know it's going to be even bigger and better in 2014.

This is their third piece, Awake Soon. I've loved this song since I first heard it in high school, and long before belly dance was my life I imagined choreographing it in a more lyrical/modern style. It's always been in the back of my head that this would be an interesting project, but this was the first opportunity that came along to set the wheels in motion. To be honest, I was totally nervous about making and staging this piece.

I tend to come into rehearsal with a lot of count-based teaching at first, and a lot of specific direction, but I had to approach this a bit differently. Not only was counting not the best way to communicate this piece to the group, but there were two groups with distinct phrasing, movement, and dynamics. We worked on it through the fall. I loosely choreographed the two groups based on the Soprano and Alto lines in the music with moments of coming together and breaking apart.

It was a big challenge for me, and I have to say that the girls were incredibly enthusiastic, patient, and positive. Like they always are :)
